A tribute to Italy: European gold team

Italy (European gold) 2009

Italy (European gold) 2009

Italy and the Netherlands started the match with a mutual respect. Until 13-13, neither of the teams could built a lead bigger than two points. Then the Italians took a charge and showed no mercy for their Dutch rivals. Italy led 16-13 on the second technical time out and after an amazing finish, closed the set 25-16. The Netherlands responded with a great style. Avital Selinger’s team showed big concentration and enjoyed a five point lead on the first technical time out (8-3). The Italians stayed calm and started to recover. Very well balanced attack, amazing digs and efficient block let the ‘Azzurre’ tie the score just before the second technical time out. When the teams left the floor for the break, Italy already led 16-15. The Netherlands tried to fight, but there was too much Simona Gioli and her teammates for the girls in orange. The Italians took the second frame 25-19. Dutch team looked completely broken mentally, while the Italians played with high confidence and it was clear that nobody could stop them on the road to defend the European title. Dutch ladies could hardly believe in what was happening on the floor. Italy’s block-defense play was unbelievable and they took a full advantage of it with killing counter attacks. Italy took the third set 25-20 and the whole match 3-0.
